Science thrives on the fact that new generations of researchers are constantly entering the academic world, and yet it is precisely young academics whose career paths are characterised by uncertainty, complexity and ambivalence. The transformation of the higher education landscape - driven by technological progress, globalisation, demographic change and economic pressure - is not only changing research and teaching, but also the framework conditions of academic work itself. Academic careers today are emerging in a field of tension between metrification, mobility requirements and changing role models. This leads to a paradoxical concentration of demands: Young researchers are expected to be excellent in their discipline and at the same time interdisciplinary, internationally mobile and at the same time locally and regionally anchored, strong in research, capable of third-party funding, didactically adept and skilled in communication - and mostly in temporary positions, with increasing work intensification and growing competition.

The authors of our issue 20/1 address psychological aspects of planning and implementing courses, discuss teaching methods in this regard and analyse the role and function of performance assessments at a high level. In this context, the reflection of teaching - by teachers and students -, the concrete use of language in teaching and the promotion of personal resources are also the subject of debate. In particular, the emotional aspects of learning are thematised in terms of the social integration of learners and their possibilities for pedagogical self-regulation. With all these perspectives on our topic, it is therefore more than clear that the findings of psychology are of eminent importance for the development of higher education.

 

 

This special issue brings together current research projects and perspectives that explore AI-induced changes in higher education in a broad sense, highlighting opportunities for reflection and design. The digital transformation offers considerable potential to better support students in the future. Digital study assistance systems (DSA) play a key role in this: they support students individually in organising their studies, accompanying the learning process and pursuing their personal educational goals. This special issue of the Zeitschrift für Hochschulentwicklung highlights the current state of research and practical applications of DSA. Five articles present innovative approaches, from AI-supported feedback and chatbots to the support functions of learning platforms and dashboards. The aim is to analyse the potential of these technologies and provide new impetus for research and development.

Student participation is in vogue: this postulate can be found in many papers on university development with the aim of improving the quality of the university as an educational institution. But what is the underlying understanding of universities, university management and university development? What is the current understanding of student participation in universities? How does participation manifest itself, for example, in the development of curricula or the organisation of courses? The articles in this issue discuss selected aspects of student participation and thus implicitly negotiate images and ideas of students and higher education. They offer insights into practices and suggestions on how student participation can be strengthened.

Academic continuing education has often not been sufficiently recognized as a systematic resource for higher education development. The latest issue of ZFHE examines how it can nonetheless play a crucial role in advancing higher education. The focus is on the role of academic continuing education as an agile element within academic practice, highlighting its early identification of needs, flexibility compared to regular degree programs, and strong service and performance orientation. The practice-oriented concepts in this issue provide valuable insights that can be applied to other universities. This issue invites reflection on the future development of higher education and offers new perspectives.
