Social practices in the transition to the digital space of distance learning

The transition to distance learning poses particular challenges for newly arrived students, as interaction and relationship-building take place exclusively digitally and without physical presence. Based on a scoping review conducted within the framework of the research project TiDE, this article analyses social practices exhibited by students and instructors in the digital space to enable belonging, community, and participation. Appropriate practices have the potential to fulfil basic social needs, increase student satisfaction, and promote academic success – provided that suitable spaces and opportunities are created and actively utilised. Finally, practical recommendations for designing such enabling spaces are offered.
