Based on various social and educational policy changes and global challenges, this article explores the consequences that can be derived from these for the appointment of professors, the structural framework for teaching competence development, and the strengthening of a teaching culture. After a brief theoretical overview of teaching competence, the article uses the example of professor appointments to show how teaching competence can be strengthened in a sustainable manner that goes beyond the individual. We also discuss how a differentiated teaching culture can be promoted, taking into account faculty and disciplinary characteristics, and which university stakeholders are necessary for a holistic approach to university development.
