AI meets teaching: The necessity of anchoring AI competences in the curriculum

Based on a survey conducted at the Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (DHBW) Heilbronn in summer 2024, which explored the dissemination and use of generative AI among students and teachers, this paper shows how learning processes can be reshaped by integrating AI into teaching. Based on the survey results, we show why anchoring AI competences in the curriculum would be beneficial for academic success and what role teachers can play in this process. Drawing on a practical example from a business administration degree programme at DHBW Heilbronn, we illustrate how the acquisition of AI skills (e.g., the reflective and critical use of AI tools) can be successfully integrated into teaching practices with the help of self-study units.
