Digital competencies play an essential role in nearly ever aspect of our lives.The education system in general, and higher education in particular, are therefore called upon to offer education in this area. In order to be able to fulfill this socially highly relevant task, broad reflection is required. This special issue not only examines the definition and significance of digital competences in higher education from various perspectives, but also broaches the issue of assessment and promotion of these competences. A total of eleven articles from the German-speaking higher education landscape present a wide range of empirical findings alongside innovative teaching concepts and promotion approaches, as well as suggestions for the further development of and research in digital competences in higher education.
