Transformative learning in the higher education context

In view of increasing social inequality and the effects of environmental destruction and climate change, universities have a responsibility to help tackle these challenges. Especially in times of crisis, there is a need – also in line with the third mission – for educational spaces that enable independent and critically reflective anticipation of the future in order to empower teachers and learners to shape a sustainable future. The concept of transformative learning (TL) plays a key role here, because educational, socialisation, teaching and learning processes literally become the subject of pedagogical debate in their transformative form – (not only) in the context of university development.
