Since 1999, the state of Baden-Württemberg has been promoting young academics in teacher training through research and junior teacher training programs in which teachers can be seconded to a university of education to complete a doctorate or habilitation. We present this program and examine its success for the years 2000 to 2015. Compared to individual doctorates, the drop-out rates are significantly lower with a comparable qualification period. The majority of teaching staff go on to pursue an academic career. The state’s funding program thus makes a successful contribution to the recruitment of young academics for teacher training.
