The digital transformation offers considerable potential to better support students in the future. Digital study assistance systems (DSA) play a key role in this: they support students individually in organising their studies, accompanying the learning process and pursuing their personal educational goals. This special issue of the Zeitschrift für Hochschulentwicklung highlights the current state of research and practical applications of DSA. Five articles present innovative approaches, from AI-supported feedback and chatbots to the support functions of learning platforms and dashboards. The aim is to analyse the potential of these technologies and provide new impetus for research and development.
