AI & challenge-based learning in higher education: Categorising potential use cases

This paper shows how the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) enables the further development of open-structured university courses based on the challenge-based learning (CBL) model and analyses the targeted use of AI to support the various CBL phases. A systematic categorisation of the possible uses of AI is presented, and a critical-reflective evaluation is then used to derive practical recommendations for action. Methodically, the process flows of CBL are analysed prototypically, and AI use cases are assigned to the specific process steps in order to identify their effect on learning processes.
