This study examines the role of chatbots as learning assistants for students of higher medical-technical services at Austrian universities of applied sciences. The focus lies on both current usage and future requirements for this technology in higher education, particularly the development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a supportive tool in the learning process. The results of an online survey with 101 students show that a vast majority are already using AI and recognize its potential. Overall, the study provides important insights into the effectiveness of AI as a learning assistant and how to design customised applications for higher education.
