Student participation, a central aspect of university development, also forms the basis for education for sustainable development (ESD). A theoretical analysis of various concepts and models of co-determination and participation reveals a range from formal participation to involvement in decision-making processes. Practical examples from the field of sustainable university development illustrate how student participation can be organised to foster genuine co-determination. This research-led development contribution addresses challenges and opportunities in higher education practice regarding higher education policymaking participation and emphasises the need to foster student participation as an integral part of sustainable higher education development.
