The future of higher education faces major challenges. Higher education institutions are confronted with growing expectations from different stakeholders regarding their educational offerings and position themselves in a competitive environment. In the light of these dynamic changes, the question arises as to how higher education must be designed in the future in order to keep pace with rapid developments. In this issue we look at concepts, analyses and ideas for the future of higher education. We focus on the organisation and governance of higher education, the opening up of the higher education institution and the individualisation of higher education, the competences that will be relevant in the future and that students will need to acquire, as well as new forms of examination and examination settings.
