This paper describes the conception and introduction of the “examination kiosk” as a new examination method to promote self-directed learning at universities. The examination kiosk offers students the opportunity to independently select the content and format of their examination within a predefined content and methodological framework. As a graded portfolio examination, it consists of several partial performances. This gives students a great deal of scope for shaping their own learning process. The use of the portfolio in a specific psychology course is presented here as an example, and initial experiences in its implementation are outlined. Recommendations for action are derived from this example, which can also support the use of the approach in other subjects.
