This paper describes a student research project that included students from the Centre of Teacher Education and the Department of Linguistics at the University of Vienna. Students majoring in Teacher Education volunteered as tutors at the ‘UniClub’, a study club that caters to pupils with a migration/refugee background. The tutoring sessions were recorded by the teacher trainees and subsequently analysed by linguistic students using a conversation analytical approach. The aim of the project was to let the students experience a ‘real-life’ research project and to highlight how conversation analysis can foster the professional development of (pre-service) teachers.
