About the issue

Sustainable development in both the private and professional sectors is a key challenge facing our society. Higher educational institutions have a special role to play here in research and, in particular, in teaching, in order to contribute and pass on concepts and ideas for overcoming this challenge. Changes are therefore needed at the macro, meso and micro levels of a university. The following questions, among others, need to be addressed at various levels: How can ESD be anchored at an institutional level? What opportunities and necessities arise and are suitable in terms of teaching design and development? What skills are required on the part of students and teachers? What kind of support do teachers need? The issue presented here is dedicated to these questions and presents concepts and efforts as to what education, further education and training and their implementation in relation to education for sustainable development at universities could look like.
